McGrew Gift Shoppe: A Dream Come True

From the earliest days of the restoration project, the hope was that the old smokehouse would become a gift shop. Today, that hope has been fulfilled due to the concerted effort of two particular volunteers - Joe Stiles and Bill Prince, who got together in 2007 and said, "Let's make it happen." After many years of hoping, wishing, and waiting the McGrew Gift Shoppe opened its doors for business in June 2008.
We have gifts from around the world, gifts for everyone. Some are from far away places and others are made from craftsmen right here in Preston County. Since we opened our doors, we have stocked the store with many items made by Preston County artisans and crafters.
Many are one-of-a-kind. Also, we specialize in McGrew items, such as postcards, notecards, cookbook, and a Cat's Meow collectible of the McGrew House. We also feature history books written by local authors Bill Williams, Connie Cox and Susan Hardesty.
Rounding out our inventory are a few items from a wholesale store.
In keeping with our Civil War Re-enactors Encampment, we have purchased merchandise from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. We have Confederate and Union play money, Confederate and Union cotton and wool caps. Also, wooden puzzles, toys, and games for the kids. They really enjoy getting a glimpse of the way Civil War Era kids entertained themselves without mechanical or electronic games.
During a recent McGrew Birthday Celebration, Kingwood elementary students were introduced to these games by Civil War Reenactor, Stacey Borror, shown below.
