Dr. Leo Kotchek Veterinary Musuem
Donated to the McGrew House in 2004, this display contains a unique collection of medical tools employed by long-time veterinarian, Leo Kotchek, and select items from his partner Dr. Joe Jolliffe. A graduate of Cornell University, Dr. Kotchek made Kingwood his home and, for over 40 years, cared for the largest of agricultural animals as well as the smallest of family pets. His tools reflect the breadth of his practice and include devices reminiscent of a by-gone time. Among the most unusual and heart-rending are the splints used on ponies injured by pulling cars loaded with coal out of the mines. Dr. Kotchek said that one of his saddest duties was healing such a pony, knowing that it would once again be sent back into the mine. Any veterinary student or animal lover would find this historical collection thought-provoking and enlightening. The museum is available for public viewing during all events at the House.
